The single most used search engine with 32% of all search engine users. Google clearly establishes the value of the web site to its potential Internet visitors as a primary factor in its indexing.
   

 
The next most used search engine with 23% of all search engine users. Yahoo is the only search engine that uses real human evaluators to review each submitted web site, determine the most appropriate indexing categories, and accept or reject the submission. The "human" touch does make a difference in the quality and effectiveness of the search engine.
   

 
Altavista is an independent search engine with a rich index for the arts, humanities, sciences, and technology. Fast results with a case specific advanced search option when researchers desire additional precision for projects. Very typical search engine, neither better or worse than many of the other search engines.
   

 
Another of the typical, but often referenced, of the search engines. Many entertainment, travel, and media searches are conducted at Ask.com. AskJeeves.com offers a "smart" search feature which resembles the "advanced" search feature of many of the other search engines. The database responds quickly, but duplicates as neither better or worse than many of the other search engines. AskJeeves.com is usually included in the metasearch engine results.
   

Dogpile is a metasearch engine which means that it searches the databases of other search engines. Dogpile can really be a time saver when a researcher desires to simultaneously search multiple databases from a single search engine.
   

 
Formerly Infoseek.com, Go.com has subsumed some of the best search engines online to create a tremendous searchable database. Features include advanced searches and service as an excellent entertainment and media resource. Very typical search engine, neither better or worse than many of the other search engines.
   

 
Hotbot is known as one of the fastest search engines online. It responds quickly to simple Boolean searches, and offers an advanced feature which can be specifically configured to net the exact results a researcher desires. A sister search engine to HotBot, Lycos offers a speedy, comprehensive database of general information. Advanced searches are also available with specific perimeters entered by the researcher. Searches are usually completed significantly faster than many of the typical search engines.
   

Mamma.com, known as "the Mother of all search engines," is another metasearch engine, like Dogpile or Metacrawler below. Mamma searches the databases of several of the typical search engines simultaneously to save researchers the time of conducting individual searches of separate search engines.
   

 
Metacrawler.com was the first of the original metasearch engines. It originally was located at a .org TLD, and later changed to the commercial (.com) Top Level Domain name. Metacrawler, like the other metasearch engines, searches many databases from the other search engines.
